Therapeutic Thursday - Yamas + Niyamas

The Yamas and Niyamas originate from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. They can be described as a guide or instruction manual on how to live in order to advance along a spiritual journey towards enlightenment. Let's learn about them together and find practical ways to apply them in everyday life.

About the event

Thursday's for the month of September with be part of a 8 class series, adding Monday nights at the park and a hike Sunday Sept 12th. There is no obligation to do anything differently than you have been doing, but the opportunity for more yoga, journaling, mediation, breathwork and expansion is available if you want it! Sign up for class like normal or instead click here to explore the 8 classes + hike with us!

After practising yoga for awhile, some may wonder if there is more to yoga than just the postures. The truth is, the asanas, or the "postures" are only a small fragment of what Yoga is. There are eight ‘limbs’ to the Yoga Sutras, each describing a different aspect of the yoga practice, and a different step on the ladder to realisation. The Yamas and the Niyamas make up the first two limbs.

Yama (moral discipline)

  • Ahimsa (non-harming or non-violence in thought, word and deed)
  • Satya (truthfulness)
  • Asteya (non-stealing)
  • Brahmacharya (celibacy or ‘right use of energy’)
  • Aparigraha (non-greed or non-hoarding)

Niyama (observances)

  • Saucha (cleanliness)
  • Santosha (contentment)
  • Tapas (discipline, austerity or ‘burning enthusiasm)
  • Svadhyaya (study of the self and of the texts)
  • Isvara Pranidhana (surrender to a higher being, or contemplation of a higher power)

This 8 class series will included not only a deep dive into the Yamas + Niyamas, but also will include yoga, journaling, energy work/reiki, food, chakras and breathwork to name a few. These experiences will be 6:30-8:30pm on Mondays + Thursdays starting September 9th. The classes will be at an outdoor location on Monday's, Vitalize on Thursday's. (And if you look at the calendar... there just so happens to be a full moon on one of the Monday's!)

Bonnie + Jojo will collaborate on some of the classes and individually guide you through some of the classes. You can expect a completely different experience each class encouraging pratical ways of taking the Yamas + Niyamas off the mat.

The whole enchilada: $90 per person for 8 two hour experiences + a bonus Hike + Meditation on 9/12 ;)

Members of Blu the Collective: $40

Individual class drop ins: $15 suggested donation. All indivduals welcome! (Same-same but different for Thursday's classes! Just a hair longer, yay!)

Upon registration, details for each individual class and what is needed will be messaged to you a few days before each class.
